Food Tour: Chinatown

This past weekend I did a food tour of Chinatown in Lower Manhattan with NY Food Tours.  It might seem strange for someone who lives in NYC to go on a food tour of a NYC neighborhood, but the reality is that even though I know a whole lot about most of Manhattan I know very little about Chinatown. I thought this would be a great way to learn about this part of the city and also get to know Chinese cuisine.

The food tour included tid bits of information about Chinese immigration to the U.S. and to NYC.  I won't share everything I learned on the tour (you gotta do the tour to learn more), but here are a few highlights of the foods we tasted on the tour:

Pork Dumplings
Beef Jerky
Scallion Pancake

These are just a few of the items we tasted, there was also a sit down dinner which included: cantonese roasted pork & duck, wontan soup, fried rice, and other treats.  This tour is informative, tasty and a great way to explore Chinatown.

Although not included in the tour, one "must stop" while in Chinatown is the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory.  I HAD to go in and get some ice cream (they offer free samples) but I wanted a little more than just a sample; I indulged in lychee ice cream.

Another tasty treat you should indulge in while in Chinatown are the Mini Cakes.  You can find vendors selling them on the street.

If you get a chance, take the time to explore Chinatown...you'll have plenty of food options to enjoy.
