Zum Stammtisch: A German Classic

Early this week I stopped by Zum Stammtisch, a German Bavarian restaurant in Queens.  I've tried to visit this restaurant for the blog a couple of times but it's always packed, as it seems to be a very popular classic German dishes.  This restaurant has a Bavarian chalet look, decorated with festive beer steins and placemats that look like scrolls.

The entrees here are huge, large portions of hearty food.  I ordered the Jagerschnitzel: a thin veal cutlet breaded and topped with mushroom sauce.  This is served with home fried potatoes.  The Jagerschnitzel was crisp (the areas not covered by the mushroom sauce) and slightly salty.  But most of the schnitzel was smothered by the mushroom sauce which was creamy.  I don't like mushrooms but I enjoyed this sauce.  The home fries were perfectly cooked with plenty of crunchy chunks.

I wish I had room to taste one of the desserts, I was eyeing the Black Forest cake or the Bavarian Chocolate Mousse cake; unfortunately I did not, so I will have to wait until the next visit to taste one of the desserts.  This was a hardy food adventure, very appropriate for a chilly day in New York.

Until next time, Buen Provecho!
